PREVIEW | Limerick and Offaly meet in National Camogie League Division 1B relegation decider

Lillis and co will be keen to kickstart their campaign with a long overdue victory in Mick Neville Park this weekend.

It is do or die for the Limerick Senior Camogie team this Saturday when they welcome Offaly to Mick Neville Park in the fifth round of the Very National League. Throw-in for the relegation battle is at 2.30pm.

Both are without a win and know another will see them relegated to the third tier. For Limerick, defeat will signal a second successive relegation while Offaly will be hoping for more of the same after staving off the Shannonsiders at the same stage in Division 1 last term.

Restructuring means that they were grouped together once again but neither have fared any better in Division 1B with Offaly’s draw with Down the only points to show for either coming into Saturday’s clash.

So far for Limerick, defeats have come against Wexford, Antrim, Waterford and most recently Down. Those leave Limerick without a point and a score difference of -43. Offaly lost to all bar Down with their scoring difference at -40.

Last year, it was Offaly that got the upper hand in the relegation final, claiming a 3-10 to 1-13 win in Birr. Caoimhe Lyons had Limerick’s only goal to help them into an early lead but the Leinster side were four to the good at the half before holding on for the win.

That was Limerick’s fourth successive loss of the league, meaning they are without a spring time win since they beat Clare in 2021.

While Limerick will be desperate to retain their place in the second tier, their relegation in 2022 did little to hamper their championship ambitions as they beat Down, Antrim and avenged the loss to Offaly to qualify for the All-Ireland quarter-finals.

Nonetheless, Lillis and co will be keen to kickstart their campaign with a long overdue victory in Mick Neville Park this Saturday afternoon.

Prior to the 1B clash, the Limerick juniors are in action against Offaly at the same venue with throw-in at 12.30pm.
