PREVIEW | Patrickswell and Adare meet with Limerick SHC semi-final spot on offer

Patrickswell and Adare face off in the Limerick Senior Hurling Championship quarter-final this Sunday.

In the second part of this Sunday’s Limerick SHC QF double header, Patrickswell take on Adare in the TUS Gaelic Grounds at 4pm.

Patrickswell were beaten by Doon in their opening game going down to 14 men prior to throw in, eventually losing out by a point. They responded in style with a resounding 3-21 to 0-17 win over Ahane to book their quarter-final spot, hitting three goals in the first quarter.

Up against them will be an unbeaten Adare side who won both of their Section B clashes. In their championship opener, they overcame Monaleen with ease, finishing 2-27 to 1-16 clear of the City outfit. In a winner takes all clash the Kildimo Pallaskenry, a second half Declan Hannon goal would prove crucial in a two point win to seal a place in the last six and a chance at immediate promotion back to Section A, after losing their relegation bout with Ahane last year.

Sunday’s clash will be the seventh consecutive meeting of the sides. Patrickswell have won five of the previous six, Adare’s most recent win coming in 2016.

These sides met in the first round of the championship last summer, the first senior championship game after the Covid outbreak. Adare led for the majority of the contest but a brace of Aaron Gillane goals helped the ‘Well to a 3-23 to 0-26 win. Adare went on to be relegated while Patrickswell moved directly into the last four of the competition.

This will be the first time since 2018 that Patrickswell will face a quarter-final, having advanced straight to the semi-finals in the previous two championship campaigns. Sunday’s meeting will be Adare’s first quarter-final appearance in four years, when they were beaten by Doon.

The sides previous knockout meeting was in the 2015 championship semi-final where Patrickswell overpowered the West men in a 2-24 to 0-8 win. That year was Adare’s most recent last four appearance. However, Patrickswell’s last quarter-final defeat came at the hands of Adare with the red and black outfit winning out 0-15 to 1-11 in their 2012 clash.

Patrickswell will be favoured to make it five on the trot against the West men but as their footballers showed in recent years, relegation can often be a platform to reinvigorate a side.

Only time will tell.
