Rathkeale go top, Breska off the mark, Abbeyfeale progress.

There was three Premier Division games down for decision as overall, it was a much quieter weekend in the Desmond League. Rathkeale kept their winning streak going and move top of the table, as Glin Rovers let a lead slip, and thus their own hopes of a third win, at home to Breska Rovers.

Weekly Observer Premier Division League Cup, Group A
Abbeyfeale Utd 3-2 Broadford United
Abbeyfeale secured their third win in the group stage of the league cup. The result ensures they will return to the semi-finals, having missed out on that stage last season. Michael Brosnan opened the scoring for Broadford, before Dylan Quirke levlleed on 32 minutes. Captain Jamie O’Connor gave the home side the lead on the hour mark, powering to the top corner from distance. Tommy Smith made it 3-1 but Broadford made John Kelliher’s charges sweat late on, with Martin Daly scoring in the closing stages.

The remaining tie in this group will be between Newcastle West town and Broadford United, with Newcastle needing just a draw to progress. Abbeyfeale will face Rathkeale in one semi-final, while Glin Rovers will face one of the aforementioned duo.

FAI Junior Cup 3rd Round
Killarney Celtic 4-0 Dromore Utd
It was always going to be at difficult task to go to a strong Kerry Premier Division side in Killarney, and so it proved for Dromore United. Matej Vrljicak netted a treble, while Cathal O’Shea was also on target, all in a dominant first 45 minutes in Celtic Park, Killarney.

Weekly Observer Premier Division
Rathkeale AFC 3-0 Granagh United
After struggling to find the break though until after the interval when Pa Wilmott found the breakthrough. Timmy Hogan and Darren Jones both scored in double quick time late on to remove any doubt for the home side. Granagh are now without a win in their two outings but appear much more competitive than they had earlier in the Autumn. Rathkeale are now 3/3 and have yet to concede a league goal.

Glin Rovers 2-3 Breska Rovers
In a dramatic game in Glin, Breska Rovers marked their return to Premier Division with a smash-and-grab win over the home side. Glin will be ruing several missed chances, having hit the crossbar on three occasions, they also also saw a penalty hit the post, which would have put them 3-1 ahead before half-time.

Breska led early on, when Jack Moroney drilled a stunning shot low into the corner from around 30 yards. Sheagh O’Connor replied following a swift counterattack and within minutes, Paul Sheehan sent home a bullet of a header. The penalty miss came after a free-kick belted the crossbar, and Glin took a deserved 2-1 lead into the break. The introduction of veteran striker Keith McNicholas yielded a near immediate result; he expertly lobbed an effort from 25 yards into the top corner with the Glin ‘keeper helpless to prevent the equaliser. A man several years his junior, Darragh O’Sullivan supplied the winner with a curling, dipping effort from the edge of the area late on.

The Clarina outfit have already eclipsed their 2006 processors who struggled for wins when the club were last in the top flight. Glin will rue those near misses, and following two wins, suffer their first loss of the season, including the league cup.

Weekly Observer Division 1
Askeaton AFC 4-2 Rathkeale B
Askeaton started this tie on the front foot and found the opener though goal hungry Sean Whelan. Stephen Smith then doubled the tally with a superb solo goal, dribbling through a raft of defenders before firing to the top corner. Smith laid one on for Sam Duggan. A Rathkeale penalty made it 3-1 at half-time. The hosts were reduced to 10 early in the second half, but Duggan helped seal the result when heading home for 4-1. Rathkeale added another nearing the hour mark but were unable to build on that and the hosts held on for a welcomed three points.

Athea United 3-0 Shountrade AFC
Hosts Athea United continued their strong form, when running out comfortable 3-0 winners over Shountrade at the Vales. Kevin Murphy set them on their way from the penalty spot, while brother Darren doubled the lead. Andrew O’Riordan added a third, to seal the three points.

Weekly Observer Division 2
Mountcollins AFC v Abbeyfeale United B – to be played on Monday 14th November.

Weekly Observer Division 3
Breska Rovers B 3-2 Feenagh
Feenagh will be kicking themselves, having led 2-0 with half-time approaching in Clarina. Luke Ryan headed home from a corner and soon found himself on the end of a free-kick to head home another. Breska put some life into the contest, when Orin Garvey’s free-kick took a wicked bounce over the keeper to half the lead. The same player was on target very soon after the break, slotting home a penalty after a clash between the keeper and Cillian Cliffe. Feenagh had the chance to restore their lead through a penalty, but this was scuffed wide. The hosts, creating some openings, took one, as Niall Quane centred for Evan McGregor who scrambled home a vital winner at the back post.

Broadford Utd B 5-1 Carrig Celtic
A stop-start season for Broadford United’s second string got a welcomed boost when they were comfortable winners at home to Carrig Celtic. It is the first league win of the season for United, who had enough through a Timmy Brosnan hat-trick, a Killian Lynch strike and Paul Madigan’s penalty. As is often the case in the bottom tier, home advantage appears important, and Broadford ensured that was the case.
