The opening round of Basketball Ireland’s Insuremyvan.ie – Division 1 President’s National Cup got underway last weekend with both Limerick teams recording wins in their cup openers.
Limerick Sport Eagles remained patient in their 85 – 69 win over Titans BC in their opening President’s National Cup clash at the UL Sport Arena. The Eagles were fresh off the back of their derby win against the Limerick Celtics last weekend, narrowly beating their fellow countymen by six points at St. Munchins College.
The Limerick Celtics tasted victory themselves in their Cup opener against Killarney Cougars at the Presentation Gym Killarney. The visitors made up for their derby loss the week prior with a 104 – 78 win against the Kerry side.
Other results across the league saw McGowans Tolka Rovers record a handsome win against visitors LYIT Donegal in a match that finished 104 – 54. Similarly, Drogheda Wolves delivered a comprehensive loss to visitors WIT Vikings in a match up that finished 105 – 64 in favour of the home side.
UCC Demons got the better of Ulster University at Mardyke Stadium, which finished 88 – 61 in favour of the Cork students. EJ Sligo All-Stars ground out a narrow victory over Grand Hotel Malahide which finished 70 – 80, while Portlaoise Panthers got one over on Scotts Lakers Killarney, with the Laois visitors winning 72 – 100.
