Roisin Upton reaches 100 caps for the Irish Women’s Hockey Team

The Limerick native made her 100th appearance for the country in a 2-1 victory over Italy on Monday.

Catholic Institute and Limerick hockey star Roisin Upton hit a century of appearances for her country yesterday as they beat Italy 2-1 in round two of the Women’s FIH Hockey Nations Cup.

Upton’s clubmate Naomi Carroll and Katie Mullan were on target for the girls in green as they recovered from their opening day loss to Spain on Sunday.

And Upton was integral to yesterday’s victory in defence, offering her services on the attack as well as she played a hand in Carroll’s second half field goal.

Upton made her debut for the National Team against Scotland in November 2016, despite being called up to represent her country on two previous occasions before this game. Two injuries ruled her out of action both times but she was eventually rewarded.

Her first goal came against Hong Kong in January 2017 and she was also a vital player in Ireland’s incredible World Cup campaign in 2018, appearing in every game including the heartbreaking final loss to the Netherlands. Upton was also a key cog in the side that qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

Ireland coach Sean Dancer was full of praise for the Limerick hockey player for her performance against Spain and commended her for her achievement.

“Roisin is one of our key players and I’m so pleased for her. What a wonderful milestone and I hope she has a lot more.”

Next up for Upton and Ireland is Korea on Wednesday at 9:45am, with a win securing them a semi-final spot on Friday.
