Seamus Flanagan nominated for June Hurler of the Month following Munster Final heroics

Flanagan will hope to follow in the footsteps of Diarmaid Byrnes who won the award for April.

Limerick’s Seamus Flanagan is in the running for the PwC/GPA Hurler of the Month Award for June after the nominees were announced.

The Feohanagh Castlemahon man will be in competition with Mikey Butler, who he could well be tasked with marking in the All-Ireland final and Tony Kelly.

Flanagan only featured in one game over the course of the month but it was his contribution that allowed Limerick the rest as he was imperious in the Munster final.

The elusive forward hit over eight points from play in the contest as Limerick outlasted Clare in an epic that needed extra time that sent them straight to the All-Ireland semi-finals.

Fellow nominee, Tony Kelly ensured extra-time with a beautiful sideline at the death to level proceedings. The Ballyea man finished with 0-13 with seven coming from play.

Kelly hit 0-4 in the All-Ireland quarter final win over Wexford but couldn’t overcome the challenge of Mike Butler on Sunday with the Kilkenny dominant.

Butler, like Flanagan, only featured in one game during June but he also earned a provincial medal, following his display against Galway in the Leinster final.

Flanagan is the third Limerick player to be nominated for a Hurler of the Month award following Diarmaid Byrnes (April) and Gearoid Hegarty (May).

Byrnes won the award but Shane O’Donnell captured the gong last month.
