Declan Nash’s senior camogie side made it two wins from two in the championship by dispatching Wexford on a 1-18 to 1-10 victory in Croagh.
Heading into the game as strong favourites, Limerick met a determined Wexford side that had suffered heavy defeats in their previous games.
The sides were level at the break (1-6 to 0-9) with a youthful Wexford side’s goal coming from a Linda Bolger long range free. Limerick recovered with Niamh Mulcahy very much to the fore. The Ahane sharpshooter hit 0-14 in all.
Nash’s charges put in a much better performance in the second half and once Caoimhe Costelloe buried their goal the result was never in doubt.
An eight-point victory was justified in the end but Limerick will need to put in a much better performance in their next game on Saturday against Galway. However, a quarter final spot is almost assured so 2019 is already a success compared to last season.
Following the victory, Nash gave his thoughts on the performance and on the upcoming game against a Galway team that comfortable beat Limerick in this year’s league semi final.
“We were made to work for it today. Wexford were excellent in the first half. They brought really super intensity and great work rate.
“We didn’t match them for the first 15 minutes, but one of the positives from it is that we were still level at half time. Second half performance was more to the levels that we are capable of.
“It’s the levels that we demand of each other and ourselves. I’m really happy with the second half.”
On the upcoming games with Kilkenny and Galway, Nash said that it was important that Limerick just focused on putting in a performance and concentred at what they have done in the championship thus far.
“We are just happy with today. Happy with last week’s win (over Offaly) and going into Galway next week on the back of two wins in a row for the first time in championship.
“There are lots of positives to bring into them games and if we reach the levels that we reached in the second half, we are more than capable.
“Galway are one of the strongest teams in camogie at the moment and have been down through the years. The league semi final is probably at the back of our minds.
“We will put that to bed. If we show up and match their performance levels, we will be there or thereabouts.”
