The 2018 SFAI New Balance Kennedy Cup commences at the University of Limerick today and will last a full week at the Limerick college. There are 32 counties taking place from all over Ireland in eight groups. The competition is held annually at the venue and has been hugely successful.
There is a strong Limerick interest in the competition with three Limerick representative teams involved. The Limerick Desmond League team are in group 2 and will face Wexford, Clare and Wicklow.
The Limerick District League team are in group 4 with Midlands, North Tipperary and WWEC.
The Limerick County side have been given a tough task in group 7 with South Dublin, West Cork and Kildare.
The competition officially begins at 4pm today with eight pitches in use. Limerick Desmond will face Wicklow on pitch three at 4pm. Limerick District will battle it out with North Tipperary on pitch eight at the same time. Limerick County will take to the field two hours later as they face Kildare on pitch 5 at 6pm.
The Dublin and District Schoolboy league have dominated the competition in recent years and were victorious in 2017 and 2016. Kerry Schoolboy/Girls league were winners in 2015. Limerick District League’s last success in the competition came in 2000. The current group will be looking to bridge that 18 year gap.
The second round of fixtures will take place at 12 and 4pm on Tuesday. It promises to be a great week for all involved.
