St Munchins book semi-final spot while champions Crescent advance to quarters in Senior Cup

It was a busy day of action in Thomond Park with three Limerick schools in Munster School’s Senior Cup action.

St Munchins came out on top in their Limerick derby while champions Crescent College survived after a hectic afternoon of Munster School’s Senior Cup action on Wednesday.

St Munchins were the first team into the semi-finals of the Senior Cup after they defeated Limerick rivals Ardscoil Rís 19-10 in the first game in Thomond Park yesterday.

With a place in the last four on the line, it was St Munchins that struck the first blow just before the ten minute mark, dotting down for a converted try. They double their advantage five minutes later to move 14-0 clear.

The North Circular Road outfit hit back just prior to the half to leave it 14-7 at the interval.

Fly-half Aaron Byrne reduced the deficit to four points on the resumption but it was Munchins who had the final say to advance into the semi-finals while Ardscoil Rís must navigate the quarters.

There they will be paired with the defending champions Crescent College Comprehensive after they came through a titanic tussle with Bandon Grammar School.

The Limerick outfit claimed a 36-29 victory after a back and forth contest with the Cork school in Thomond Park.

Bandon drew first blood with Conor Ryan dotting down the first of his three tries. Crescent responded with a Fionn Casserly try and a penalty had them into a 8-5 lead. A Bandon penalty had the sides level at half time.

Crescent retook the lead after the restart through a Cillian Kenny try but Bandon were equal to it with Calem Harte touching down. A pair of tries from the reigning champions had them 29-15 clear with Marcus Lyons and Mark Fitzgerald crossing the whitewash and Eoin O’Callaghan taking his tally to nine.

Ryan had his second try for Bandon in response before Crescent’s own Conor Ryan reestablisher their advantage. Ryan completed his hat trick for Bandon but it wasn’t enough as the champions held on.

PBC and CBC meet later today to decide the second semi-finalist with Rockwell College taking on Colaiste Pobail Bheanntrai the following afternoon for a place in the quarters.
