Strong second-half display sees Doon through to SHC semi-final

Doon will face reigning champions Na Piarsaigh in the semi-final in two weeks time.

Doon have reached the semi-finals of the 2023 Limerick Senior Hurling Championship following their seven point win over Mungret St Paul’s in the TUS Gaelic Grounds.

They managed to get the better of the city club following a tough battle in the sun, with both teams enjoying purple-patches throughout the game.

It finished 1-25 to 0-21 in Doon’s favour as they return to the last four for the eighth successive year where they will meet Na Piarsaigh.

The sides went in level at the break, with each team landing thirteen points in a tentative first-half.

Mungret started the better of the pair, flying out of the traps with some tremendous scores, but Doon slowly grew into the game.

Niall Mulcahy and Paul O’Brien scored some fantastic points for the city club, while Adam English, Pat Ryan and Kevin Maher all impressed for Doon in the opening thirty minutes.

English, who suffered an early ankle injury, combined with Ryan to create the best goal chance of the first-half, slipping the former Limerick man in on goal before his effort came crashing back off the crossbar.

Fergie O’Loughlin’s men emerged the stronger of the sides in the second-half, and began to build up a healthy lead.

With Doon taking control in the second-half, they found themselves four points clear after ten minutes, before English would work his magic to produce an amazing solo-goal.

Mungret battled back to close the gap as the second-half rambled on, but ultimately English’s goal would be the difference between the sides, as they ran out comfortable winners in the end.

Doon will meet reigning champions Na Piarsaigh in the semi-final in two weeks time, who are in search of their eighth Limerick Senior Hurling title.

The pair met in the group-stage of the championship, as Na Piarsaigh hit 4-23, sweeping Doon aside with a 19-point win.
