“This year could be a tight Championship” | Ahane’s Suzie McGovern on the competitiveness of the SCC this year

Ahane were semi-finalists in the Senior Camogie Championship last year.

2018 winners Ahane will get their Senior Camogie Championship campaign started in a repeat of last year’s semi-final against Killeedy this Saturday.

Killeedy got the better of the side in last year’s fixture, winning out 4-9 to 1-4 to book a place in the final of the competition and sending Ahane home.

However, it’s a new season and a new opportunity for Ahane to get things right. The side have been knocking around the final stages for the previous years, winning in 2018 and losing in 2019, but player Suzie McGovern believes this year’s competition will be a tight affair.

“This year we’ve really focused on sharpness on the pitch, introducing our new players and getting them used to playing. I really think this year we have great potential there we just need to go out and show it.”

“With the likes of Newcastle West and Killeedy, they’ve great players as well and I just think this year will be a tight championship.”

Speaking at the launch of the Neville Jewellers Senior Camogie Championship, McGovern was also asked about the possibility of Niamh Mulcahy lining out.

The 32-year-old, who was awarded an All-Star award in 2019, is considered as one of the best players in the county and McGovern didn’t give much away on the situation.

“I think we’ll keep that as a surprise.”

“You know Niamh, [she] could stop stop playing for years and still come back and be the best player in Limerick so I think we’ll wait and see what happens there.”
