Three Limerick sides get National Basketball League seasons underway with victory

The InsureMyVan.ie Men’s Division One and MissQuote.ie Women’s Division One campaigns began this weekend.

It was a successful weekend for Limerick in the returning National Basketball League with three of the four sides from the county getting wins in their opening game.

The Limerick Celtics Men’s kicked off the weekend with their away tie to Fr Matthews in Cork where they scored a century of points to win 85-100. Their Limerick counterparts, the Sport Eagles were also successful in their opener with a 69-80 victory over Scotts Lakers SPK with both sides victorious on the road.

Elsewhere in the First Division, there were wins for SETU Carlow, Team North West, Drogheda Wolves, Moy Tolka Rovers and Ulster University.

Meanwhile, the Limerick Celtics Women’s side followed suit as they overcame a 17-point deficit to secure a home win 90-78 against the Pheonix Rockets. Adriana Acosta scored 24 of the points in a sensational display, with the Limerick outfit only taking the lead in the final quarter.

Coach Tony Hehir was delighted with his side’s response to secure the win.

“The girls showed great character and determination and I’m absolutely delighted for the girls to get their first win of the season in what was an amazing atmosphere in Crescent Comp this afternoon.”

Unfortunately, there was a loss for the Limerick Sport Huskies who fell short in a 45-60 home defeat to Portlaoise Panthers.

St Pauls Killarney head up the table as they scored a 40-point win while there were also victories for Portlaoise Panthers, McEvoy’s Cavan Eagles, Swords Thunder and Griffiths College Templeogue.

There’s a week turnaround for each side as the action begins again next weekend. The Sport Eagles travel to Moy Tolka Rovers while the Celtics host SETU Carlow.

In the MissQuote.ie Women’s First Division, the Celtics travel to St Pauls Killarney while the Sport Huskies will look to rectify their defeat when they travel to Oblate Dynamos.
