1,506 fans were in attendance in Markets Field, and they were thrilled from the first minute, as Mark Byrne almost gave the hosts the lead when he volleyed Fionn Doherty’s cross off the post.
Treaty United steadied the ship in the League of Ireland First Division on Friday night, as they battled to a 0-0 draw at home to Kerry FC. The Shannonsiders had been on a horrid run of three straight defeats, but shared the spoils with their visitors to stop the rot.
It means that Tommy Barrett’s side sit sixth in the table, buoyed by their strong start to the season. They hold a game in hand on fifth place Bray Wanderers, who occupy the final playoff spot on goal difference.
The draw was Kerry’s sixth of the season, the Kingdom winning just one game all season, and they are three points behind Treaty in eighth place.
The result also means that Kerry have never beaten Treaty in league play, with the sides meeting six times to date.
It was a tough battle on Friday night, the hosts operating without their talisman, Enda Curran. Corey Chambers, who was a doubt for the tie, started in goal and put in a fine display to keep his fourth clean sheet of the season.
1,506 fans were in attendance in Markets Field, and they were thrilled from the first minute, as Mark Byrne almost gave the hosts the lead when he volleyed Fionn Doherty’s cross off the post.
Doherty proved to be a handful on the left wing in the early stages, and he created a good chance for Stephen Cristopher who headed wide in the 17′.
The 19-year-old wide man was involved in a flowing Treaty move just minutes into the second half, as he weaved through the midfield to pick out Mark Byrne, who moved the ball wide to Yoyo Mahdy. Madhy’s delicate first time cross put Lee Devitt in at the back post, but the midfielder’s effort was denied by Antonio Tuta.
Just moments later it was Chamber’s turn to produce a fine save with his feet, as the Treaty shot stopper turned Sean O’Connell’s attempt wide.
Daniel Okwute was involved in most of the good play for the visitors, and he was instrumental in a move on the hour mark that saw 19-year-old Ronan Teahan rattle the woodwork.
Chambers pulled off a double save to the delight of the crowd with the clock tucking down, denying Okwute who looked certain to score from close range after Cian Brosnan’s shot was parried into his path.
After four added minutes the final whistle rang around Markets Field and the hosts had arrested their losing run.
Next up for Barrett’s men is a trip to Bray Wanderers this Friday, a crucial tie with the pair level on points.
