Treaty United slump to Bray Wanderers defeat | HIGHLIGHTS

The highlight for the visitors came in the final 20 minutes, when 19-year-old Leon Kirrane netted his first goal for the club, a fine strike to the top corner.

Treaty United remain winless in their last seven League of Ireland First Division games after Friday night’s 2-1 defeat away to Bray Wanderers at the Carlisle Grounds.

The result takes the hosts into fourth place, three points clear of Tommy Barrett’s men, who lay in seventh with a game in hand.

An early strike from Kieran Cruise set Bray on their way in Wicklow on Friday, with Peter Grogan scoring 20 minutes later to ensure they headed into the interval with a 2-0 advantage.

The highlight for the visitors came in the final 20 minutes, when 19-year-old Leon Kirrane netted his first goal for the club, a fine strike to the top corner to reduce the arrears.

The continued absence of Enda Curran and David Tarmey through injury meant that Yoyo Mahdy got another chance from the start, the 26-year-old up against his former club, where he spent last season.

Cruise pounced on a Treaty defensive mistake just minutes into the game to poke home with his left foot and send his side into the lead. It set the tone for what was going to be a difficult afternoon for the Shannonsiders.

It was another defensive error that allowed the hosts to bag their second 20 minutes later, with Grogan on hand to turn home a low cross in the six-yard box.

Barrett’ charges created several chances in the second-half, yet nothing that seriously worried Stephen McGuinness in goal.

That changed in the 73′, when Kirrane received the ball just inside the Bray box. The Croom man controlled the ball with his left foot, before using his right to shift the ball wide of the opposition defender, and unleashing a strike into the top right corner.

It was the 19-year-old’s first goal for the club, but it was not enough, as the hosts held on to take all three points.

Treaty’s attention now turns to the visit of second placed UCD to the Markets Field this Friday. The sides met in the second game of the season, as the Shannonsiders got an important win in the capital.
