Treaty United’s new third kit reflects history and spirit

The third kit will make its debut in this Friday night’s SSE Airtricity League of Ireland First Division game away to Finn Harps and in the SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division away to Cork City in a game that will be shown live on TG4.

Treaty United F.C. are delighted to announce the launch of a third or alternative jersey design. Earlier in the year, Treaty United reached out to former US international and English Premier League player, Jay DeMerit, to design their ‘back to blue’ first kit. That resulted in an iconic blue jersey which was launched back in March. As part of that overall project, Jay was also given the brief to design an alternative third kit.

Jay’s concept for the design was to again reach into the history of Limerick city. Similar to the home and away kits,  the outline of King John’s Castle is incorporated into the front and back of the jersey showing the fabric of the city embedded into the fabric of the jersey reminding the wearer of the city that they are representing. The stain glass effect on the sleeves of the jersey is inspired by the stained glass window at entrance to the Limerick City Gallery of Art. Inside the collar and embedded in the sleeve design is the Latin motto of the city of Limerick Urbs antiqua fuit studisque asperrima belli – an ancient city well studied in the art of war – an acknowledgement of the fighting spirit we expect from the club’s teams and the mindset footballers need when they go into battle in each game. In effect, you are metaphorically going into battle for your crest, for the place you are representing.

The bright colours in the sleeve contrast sharply with the black body of the jersey, chosen to highlight the variety of colours in the glass. The olive trim on the jersey mirrors the olive colour represented within the stained glass window. The result is a truly unique jersey, incorporating the history of the city while embodying the spirit of its people.

“I asked Jay to come up with designs for our jersey and I was blown away with the 3rd kit. I’ve never seen stained glass on a kit before. Tying in the history of Limerick and this is a design from within the city makes it even more special. Everyone has said it’s one of the best kit designs they’ve ever seen and we’re really excited to debut it this weekend for both our senior men and women.”

The concept for the Treaty FC jerseys started with the fabric of the town, King John’s Castle. I felt it was important to have the staple point of the city in the watermark for all of the shirts. For the 3rd kit, I feel it is always important to step out of the traditional colours and designs, as it’s supposed to be different and fun.

As I looked more into the history of Limerick and the places around the town, I noticed that the Limerick City Gallery of Art had some pretty cool art representations, especially the stained glass window of the entrance. I played with using the textures of the window on the whole of the jersey, but when I moved the window to the sleeves, it made total sense. The shape of the window works really well with the shape of the sleeve, and because the colours are so vibrant, I didn’t want them to blend in with the rest of the shirt, so I muted the colour palette to black and olive, and still kept the watermark of the castle to keep in line with the other two jerseys. I liked how the olive colour was already in the stained glass as well, making the palette work throughout.

It was super fun designing the concepts and I was really happy to see all of the jerseys well received by the club & fans when I was in town last month. I’m already working on some concepts for next year, so stay tuned!
