UL begin Sigerson Cup campaign against CIT

Once again University of Limerick are the county’s sole representative in the Sigerson Cup. UL kick of their campaign by welcoming CIT to UL this Tuesday at 2pm.

Unlike the Fitzgibbon Cup, the Sigerson is run on a straight knockout basis, so defeat for UL will mean they exit the competition at the first hurdle.

They are managed once more by Monaleen footballer Brian Carson who is a former coach of the Limerick Senior Football team. Carson will hope to build on the progress the side have made in recent years, reaching the semi finals of the Sigerson in the past two years, losing out to UCD on both occasions.

UL last made the final back in 1997 where they were defeated by IT Tralee. They are yet to taste success in the competition.

As part of their panel, UL have three Limerick men in Gearoid Hegarty, James Naughton and Eoghan O’Connor. Neither of the three are playing football with Limerick this year, with Hegarty also a member of John Kiely’s Senior Hurling panel netting a goal last weekend against Laois. The St Patricks man is also a key member of the UL Fitzgibbon Cup team.

Lining out for CIT will be Mountcollins man Stephen Cahill. Cahill was a member of John Kiely’s Limerick senior hurling panel last summer after two years with the senior footballers in Limerick.

Should UL overcome the challenge of CIT, they will progress to play either the holders, St Marys University College or Ulster University Jordanstown in the quarter finals.

Todays game throws in at 2pm on Pitch 1 on the UL Grounds.
