UL suffer defeat to TU Dublin after penalties in Sigerson Cup classic

The Limerick college looked comfortable with a six point lead at half time before an onslaught from the Dublin side in the third quarter.

The University of Limerick will have to come through the back door of the Sigerson Cup after losing out in penalties to TU Dublin in Castletroy on Tuesday evening.

There was nothing to separate the sides in the second round tie after extra-time with the capital college winning out 3-1 in penalties. UL had led by as many as seven points in normal time before 2-5 without reply turned the contest.

UL led 1-9 to 1-3 at half time and looked comfortable throughout the opening 30 minutes. Wing back Darragh Cashman had them 1-2 to 0-1 to the good early on with a brilliantly taken goal. Scores from Paul Walsh, Emmet McMahon, Paul Keaney and Eoghan MacLoughlin helped them into a six point advanatage at the interval with Kevin Callaghan’s goal keeping TUD in the contest.

Walsh had the first score of the second half to push them seven points clear. However, TUD’s reply was impressive as they kicked 2-5 on the trot, Cian Grimes and Kevin Callaghan netting with Sean Guidan scoring a pair of outstanding points.

But in injury time, UL had four successive scores to tie things at 1-14 to 3-8 with St Kierans’ man John Hayes among the scorers and Ciaran Downes getting the leveller.

The sides exchanged a pair of scores in the first period of additional time but two from Guiden looked like it was enough for TUD before Hayes struck in injury time to ensure penalties.

But a pair of missed penalties gave the Dublin side the advantage as they tucked away each of theirs to advance to the quarter-finals.

UL will play a third round game next week as each now becomes a knockout clash. The clash in Maguries was the only game to be played on Tuesday evening with the other four fixtures postponed due to the weather.
