UL to take on UCC in the O’Connor Cup Semi-Final

UL will take on UCC in a repeat of last year’s final.

The UL Ladies Gaelic Footballers will play UCC in their O’Connor Cup this Saturday March 10th at IT Blacnhardstown in Dublin. It’s a repeat of last year’s final where UL were victorious on the day winning the game 2-05 to 0-08.

UL started of their campaign this year with a fine win over NUIG beating them 5-23 to 0-04 in a very one sided affair. The stand out players on that day were Cork’s Eimear Scally and Mayo’s Shauna Howley who drove their side to a comprehensive win.

The UL women then took the journey up to UCD to take on the Dublin College in round two. This was a very competitive game for UL and one that they needed. UCD started of the game well, UL even losing their goalkeeper Caoimhe Moore to a yellow card towards the end of the second half.

But this only spurred them on and they began to get through the gaps in UCD’s defence to get vital scores, one coming from the boot of last year’s Intermediate Player of the Year Tipperary’s Aisling McCarthy and the other coming from a penalty for Scally. The game ended 2-20 to 1-11.

On the other side UCC have had a tougher campaign. They narrowly lost out to DCU by a single point in a game that ended 1-08 to 1-07, but went on to play NUIG for a place in the weekend and had a strong win against the Galway college beating them 3-11 to 0-05 points.

UL’s team is strong once again this year having only lost last year’s Captain Anna Galvin. While Waterford’s Caoimhe McGrath and Tipperary’s Elaine Fitzpatrick are out due to injury.

UL have a good mix of youth and experience with Clare captain Laurie Ryan, Mayo’s Fiona McHale, Galway’s Louise Ward, Tipperary’s Maria Curley and Roscommon’s Joanne Cregg.

Other players include Dual Stars hailing from Tipperary, Orla O’Dwyer and Roisin Howard, Galway’s Shauna Molloy and Kerry’s Laoise Coughlan.

UCC also have a mix of county players on their side, majority hailing from Cork. These include dual players Libby Coppinger and Hannah Looney, and also Eimear Meaney.

The winner of the Semi-Final will go on to play either DCU or UCD who play in the other semi-final. The final will be like on TG4 on March 11th at 4pm in the Abbotstown Centre of Excellence.
