UL travel to Galway to take on the champions in Sigerson Cup quarter-final

UL and the University of Galway will renew acquaintances in the Sigerson Cup following last year’s decider.

The University of Limerick will face familiar opposition in their Sigerson Cup quarter-final this Tuesday evening as they take on the defending champions, the University of Galway.

Declan Brouder’s men fell to the Galway outfit in last year’s final as their search for a maiden title continues. That was only their second-ever final appearance, with their first coming in 1997.

The University of Galway will have home advantage this Tuesday evening with the game to be streamed live by Higher Education GAA.

UL have had a stop-start campaign thus far as they prepare for their fourth game in this year’s competition. They kicked off their season with an impressive 2-7 to 0-10 win over UCC in the Mardyk. Paul Walsh and Paul Mathews netted on that occasion but the Limerick side were shocked in round two, falling to defeat against TU Dublin in Castletroy.

Leading by six at the break following Darragh Cashman’s goal, TUD overturned the deficit to lead by four late on before successive scores from UL sent the game to extra-time. There was nothing to separate the teams in additional time with TU Dublin winning on penalties.

That forced UL into the third round but they regrouped in style, beating SETU Carlow 4-10 to 1-4 with Ciaran Downes (2), Aaron Griffin and Sean McDonnell grabbing the goals.

The champions, on the other hand, have had things their own way thus far with comprehensive victories over Maynooth University and UCD. They beat the Kildare outfit by ten points with an eight point win over the roll of honour leaders.

University of Galway are looking to move into second outright in the roll of honour as they currently sit level with UCC on 23. UCD have won 34 titles.

UCD meet TU Dublin in their quarter-final on Wednesday with St Mary’s taking on UCC the same evening. DCU host MTU Cork in the other last eight tie on Tuesday evening.
