UL and Ireland Lacrosse are looking to gain exposure for the sport as they host the U21 World Championships.
The University of Limerick will be host twenty three teams from all across the world this Summer as the Lacross Men’s U21 World Championships takes place on the Limerick campus.
For ten days international players will take part in 100 games in a bid to be crowned the Lacrosse World Champions.
The event will be hosted from the 10th of August to the 20th in UL.
This is the first time Ireland will be hosting a World Lacrosse Championship. The Irish Lacrosse governing body organised the competition in conjunction with UL and others.
The CEO of Lacrosse Ireland Michael Kennedy, spoke about the importance of hosting this tournament saying,
“This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for Ireland. All eyes will be on Limerick as the world’s best U21 men’s lacrosse players compete for the sports highest honour.
“An event of this magnitude and complexity requires incredible partners and tremendous cooperation. We are grateful for the support of Limerick City and County Council, Fáilte Ireland, Shannon Region Conference & Sports Bureau and University of Limerick to help ensure the world championship is the largest and best ever.”
Lacrosse has one of the largest growth percentages in the world, the game has an overall increase in players of 500% since 2002.
Limerick Mayor and Counsellor Daniel Butler was discussing the importance this will have on Limerick itself.

“Hosting large, international sports events produces millions in economic impact for Limerick and underscores the importance of attracting events such as the Men’s U21 Lacrosse World Championship, the Ryder Cup and others here in the future. There are plans to include interactive fan festivities to learn about lacrosse and engage in various fun activities.
The Teams competing in the 2022 World Lacrosse U21 Men’s Championship include host Ireland, Australia, Canada, China, Chinese Taipei, Czech Republic, England, Germany, Hong Kong, Haudenosaunee Nationals, Israel, Jamaica, Japan, Kenya, Korea, Latvia, Netherlands, Poland, Puerto Rico, Sweden, Uganda, USA and Wales.
