WATCH: Adrian Breen – Sacrifice is “worth it” when you get to fulfil every hurlers dream

Na Piarsaigh sharpshooter, Adrian Breen has spoken about the sacrifices that have been made for the sake of hurling success but insists it is all worth it to wear the club jersey in Croke Park on St Patrick’s Day.

“In order to be successful in hurling for us, it requires sacrifice. That is not only socially but in terms of how you live your lifestyle… But that sacrifice is worth it when you have the opportunity to represent your club, your family, your friends in Croke Park. That’s a dream a lot of hurlers have never got the chance to fulfil.”

Breen, and his teammates are one match away from a second club title in three years but they are well aware of the challenge facing them in reigning champions, Cuala.

“They probably have a higher level of hurling, with no disrespect to Slaughneil but it’s more the environment that Cuala are born out of in Leinster…. They garnish a lot of respect.

“We fancy ourselves but we’ve also done our homework on them too.”

“It would be foolish of us to think that one man, Con O’Callaghan, can lead Cuala to an All Ireland crown in 2017 and all the way back in 2018. He’s surrounded by 14 other players on that pitch”.

Regardless of the result, it will be a special day for the Breen household with two sons involved and he admits talk at home has been all about preparation.

“It’s a household full of hurling fanatics. We try and leave hurling out of it as much as possible at the dinner table but there are moments where we get into the nitty-gritty of it and the potential tactics and team line-ups and all this, just as there is in any GAA household I suppose.”
