Limerick FC returned to winning ways on Friday night with a 1-0 victory over Bray Wanderers at the Markets Field.
Thus far, Limerick manager Tommy Barrett and his squad have exceeded pre-season expectations and find themselves in fourth place after 11 games. The Super Blues are just six points from top spot.
To put Friday night’s result into perspective, Barrett was only able to name four substitutes due to injury and suspension to the likes of Sean McSweeney and Karl O’Sullivan who have been prominent all season.
Also, well documented off the field troubles must have affected the squad as the payment for March only came through on the day of the Bray game.
There was also tension off the field as Pat O’Sullivan was accompanied by a possible new investor in Sean Connor. Limerick supporters made their dismay clear.
Earlier in the day, the popular Daly family made it clear that they would no longer be willing to be the main sponsor of the team due to a break down in take over talks in recent weeks. With all of this taken into account, it really was an exceptional result.
Lee Devitt and Ger Barry were handed their first starts and Devitt in particular impressed in unfamiliar left-wing role.
It was captain Shaun Kelly who produced a moment of brilliance as his 20 yard strike flew into the net and past Gabriel Sava, much to the delight of the hardcore support in attendance.
Tommy Barrett spoke to the local media afterwards and was pleased with the result. To watch the interview, click on the link below.
