WATCH: Intermediate football final preview

Rathkeale face Galbally this Tuesday under lights in the 2018 Intermediate Football Final. This is a meeting of last years losing Intermediate finalists Galbally and Rathkeale who were relegated from the senior ranks in 2017.

These sides met in the final round of the group stages with Galbally securing an impressive 2-8 to 0-7 victory over Rathkeale. However, the west club came into the game with their place in the semi-finals secured after picking up four wins from the opening four games.

Rathkeale manager Kilian Phair has nurtured a number of the current senior team in his time as a teacher in Colaiste Na Trocaire and says this relationship could be key on Tuesday night with such a young squad at his disposal.

“You want expectations to be there, but you don’t want to get too far ahead of yourself, but I’ve been very fortunate in that I’ve had the clear majority of these lads from U12/13 in school and they worked their way up… We know each other inside out.”

As for Galbally, that victory over Rathkeale set up a clash with Glin in the quarter finals where they won out comfortably 0-17 to 0-8. In the semi final they faced a gallant Pallasgreen side who made them work for a 1-5 to 0-6 victory which secured Galbally a spot in the final for the second consecutive year.

After Garryspillane secured the Premier Intermediate hurling title at the weekend, the footballers will be keen to follow suit. Manager Ger Fahy is hoping his side can learn from last year where they were beaten by St Senans in the final.

“I think we have prepared very well for it this year. We are a lot better prepared this time than we were this time last year heading into the final… All in all, it will be a big challenge but I thin we are prepared for it.”
