It wasn’t pretty but Ireland are back in the hunt for the Six Nations Championship after a 26-16 bonus point win over Italy in Rome.
Tries from Quinn Roux, Jacob Stockdale, Keith Earls and Conor Murray saw Ireland to the hard fought win.
They were pushed all the way by a gallant Italian outfit but ultimately had too much for Conor O’Shea’s side.
After missing a few chances in the opening 10 minutes, Roux went in for the first try after powerful work from Dave Kilcoyne and Chris Farrell.
Italy responded with a Tomasso Allan penalty but were undone at the restart as Stockdale took advantage of a knock on to score unopposed.
Italy then took advantage of some slack Irish defending to score through Luca Morisi and then Edoardo Padovani to lead 16-12 at the break.
Ireland were back in front 10 minutes into the second half through a fine Earls finish after Murray’s quick tap penalty.
The bonus point came 14 minutes from time as Murray carried over from the back of a lineout maul to give Ireland the 10 point winning margin.
