WATCH: “It’s been good” – Paul O’Connell pleased with Irish lineout progress

Ahead of Irelands Round 4 Guinness Six Nations clash with Scotland in Murrayfield, Irish Forwards Coach Paul O’Connell discussed his integration into the role.

Appointed on the eve of this year’s tournament, the former Munster lock has made an immediate impact with his country, with their lineout success one of the big success stories.

In preparation for Scotland, O’Connell admitted he was pleased with that aspect of his coaching but ensured there was work still to do in that regard.

“I think some parts of it [the lineout] have been good, some parts of it have been poor.

“We’ve managed to give away a few penalties through some sloppy defence on our behalf which, I suppose, has given the opposition access into the game.

“And that’s one of the big things you don’t want to do. You want to put pressure on opposition ball certainly but you don’t want to be giving away penalties, which we have once or twice.

“But it’s been good. The calling has been good. The players have been really impressive, the way they take ownership and run the operation. So you’re just trying to facilitate them and help them see what you can see with the benefit of the video.”
