Former Liverpool and Irish soccer star John Aldridge was the special guest at Castletroy Park Hotel on Thursday evening at the launch of the Aisling Annacotty patronage scheme. The former international was one of the main attractions and reminisced on a successful professional career with master of ceremonies and former Limerick Live 95FM soccer correspondent Leonard Bourke while plenty of football enthusiasts of all ages looked on.
Speaking after the event, Aldridge was extremely impressed by the current set-up at Aisling Annacotty while also complimentary of the club’s development plan for the future.
“It’s a great example of what you can do to nurture young lads. The passion in this country is quite amazing. I know from working with the FAI that they are quite well behind it. You have to be patient and hopefully these lads will benefit from all the work these gentlemen (Aisling Annacotty officials) are putting into it.”
Aldridge mentioned that he thoroughly enjoyed his career and the antics which professional footballers got up to in the eighties and nineties. When asked if he would prefer to be playing in the modern era, he was quick to dismiss the suggestion.
“I’d always stick with mine (era). We had a life and a laugh. It was a great culture to play in at that time. We worked hard and we played hard.”
John also spoke about his time at Tranmere Rovers while also discussing Liverpool’s title chances. To watch the full video click on the link below.
