Limerick FC climbed to second place in the Airtricity League First Division with a 2-0 win over Athlone Town at the Markets Field on Friday night. Goals from Shane Tracy and Conor Ellis provided the platform for the victory.
Limerick FC started brightly and winger Karl O’Sullivan latched on to a Shane Tracy free-kick but blazed the ball over the crossbar.
It was from a Tracy free-kick delivery from the opposite side which drew the first goal. Tracy’s inswinging cross evaded everybody in the box before bouncing and floating into the top corner of Aaron Myles net.
The second half was a more open affair and Limerick should have extended their lead when substitute Kieran Hanlon was played straight through on goal but he failed to beat Aaron Myles.
With five minutes remaining, the Shannonsiders did manage to secure a second goal. Substitute Colm Walsh-O’Loughlen played a clever ball to Ellis who coolly slotted past Myles.
The Super Blues managed the final few minutes well and secured their third home clean sheet in four games. Conor Ellis also scored his third goal in three games.
Despite the victory, Limerick manager Tommy Barrett feels there is more to come from his team. To watch the full interview, see below.
