WATCH | “Naturally we’re disappointed”| Mary I’s Jamie Wall reflects on defeat to UCC in Fitzgibbon cup opener

Mary I suffer opening round defeat to UCC in impressive first game of Fitzgibbon Cup

Mary I couldn’t match reigning champions UCC’s class in their 1-21 to 0-19 loss.

Looking back on the game Jamie Wall felt there were times in the game where if they kept their foot on the throttle they may have had a chance in being competitive towards the final minutes.

“naturally we’re very disappointed, I thought we played very well today, I think we has the chances probably to be a bit closer at the end, whether you get over the line or not then thats….”

Mary I struggled to take the lead for the match but was not for the want of trying as the Limerick College matched the Cork side almost score for score throughout the game. As always in the sport a goal always makes a big difference to the game and as the second half resumed that’s what the championship defenders got.

“It was a real suckerpunch there , I think we hasn’t kind of set up defensively. Sometimes from a throw-in that’s the way you are. It was a well taken goal from their point they had runners, very similar to the way that Cork are trying to play at the moment. That was the difference in the end”

Wall looks to the next games in hope albeit his group being arguably the toughest in the competition he believes they have a real chance. Mary I face league winners NUIG next and finally UCD.

“I think the winners of the competition are gonna come from this group. Having said that we don’t even know who of the four are going to qualify. If you get a result in the next game it puts you in a position where you know any team in the group can do you a favor and win a game for you”
