William O’Connor advanced to round three of the William Hill PDC Darts Championship, following a 3-0 victory over three time BDO World Champion, Glen Durrant. The Limerick arrowsmith didn’t need to produce his best to book his place in round three, which takes place after Christmas.
Durrant the 24th seed is a Premier League winner but his poor form in 2021 continued and The Magpie had routine victory.
In truth, this game was far too simple with Durrant only winning one leg over the course of the three sets.
O’Connor broke the Durrant throw in the very first leg of the match, landing the first ‘170’ checkout of the tournament. Durrant replied by breaking back but O’Connor comfortably took the last two legs to take the early set advantage.
Set two was more straight forward, take it 3-0. O’Connor securing it with a nice 82 checkout, landing the bullseye and D16 combination to heap more misery on Durrant. He allowed the Middlesbrough native just two darts at double in each of the opening set, while landing 6 of his 9 efforts.
The final set proved to be a scrappy contest, with O’Connor again taking it 3-0, after Durrant missed three darts at double to prolong the match.
As a result, O’Connor plays Michael Smith, who had an impressive 3-0 victory on Tuesday evening, averaging 106.32. That match is set for Monday 27th December, in the afternoon session.
O’Connor now guarantees himself ยฃ25,000, which will help his ranking which had slipped slightly this year, down to 42nd.
