Limerick FC succumbed to a narrow 2-1 defeat at the hands of St. Patrick’s Athletic on Friday night as two second half goals from substitute Conan Byrne cancelled out Billy Dennehy’s opener for Limerick from the penalty spot. The penalty incident and conversion can be seen below.

It was a game in which Limerick were unlucky to lose as they were the much better team in the first half. Young winger Will Fitzgerald’s last minute goal was wrongly ruled to be offside and that would have rescued a draw for the Shannonsiders. Considering the financial problems in the background, Tommy Barrett, the backroom staff and players are putting on a defiant show on the pitch.
Young Limerick netminder Tommy Holland was in good form and he denied former Limerick winger Dean Clarke with a superb save to keep Limerick ahead before tired legs prevailed in a disappointing finish for the visitors.

Goal scorer Billy Dennehy spoke to Eir Sport immediately after the game and said that he and his teammates will fight to the bitter end in their bid to remain in the Airtricity League Premier Division this season. Next up for Limerick is the visit of high flying Waterford United to the Markets Field next Friday July 27th at 7.45 pm. As the club are now seven points behind Bohemians, it will be a tough ask to escape a promotion/relegation playoff in October.
