Graham Shaw’s Irish Women’s Hockey side got their world cup campaign off to a blistering start on Saturday evening with a statement 3-1 win over a USA side ranked 7th in the world.
Ireland will face India next on Thursday at 2pm before taking on hosts England and Olympic gold medalists on Sunday. England and India drew 1-1 in their opener leaving Ireland two points clear at the top and knowing another win would be a huge step in making the knockout stages.
Deirdre Duke gave Ireland the lead on five minutes having rounded the keeper and finishing from a close angle. Shirley McCay made it 2-0 on 12 minutes before the US pulled on back minutes later from Paolino. Duke restored Ireland’s 2 goal advantage on 41 minutes with her second of the game. Some heroic defending kept the USA at bay for the remainder of the game.
