WATCH: The best of the action as Glenstal claim first ever Munster Senior Schools Cup

Limerick side Glenstal Abbey won the Clayton Hotels Munster Schools Senior Cup for the first time in their history in a nail biting 18-17 victory over CBC at Musgrave Park on Sunday afternoon.

With Sunday’s sporting schedule decimated due to the bad weather, the conditions in Cork were far from ideal as both sides set about putting some good rugby together.

The first half was a tight affair with both sides exchanging penalties to make the score 3-3 at the break.

Glenstal came out all guns blazing in the second half. A break from wing Andrew Hogan wrong footed the CBC defence and following a ruck infringement, Ben Healy slotted the penalty to edge the Murroe side into a 6-3 lead.

The Limerick side then scored their first try when number 8 Mark Fleming cut though the defensive line to establish a foothold deep in CBC territory. A few phases later and Caolan Dooley was put though to touch down on in the right hand corner.

The Cork side responded quickly when Robert Loftus got their opening try of the afternoon with Hedderman adding the extras to make it CBC 10-11 Glenstal.

The CBC try didn’t rock Glenstal’s confidence and the Limerick side crossed the try line for the second time in the 63rd minute to once more take control of the game.

Ronan Quinn then showed power and pace to run from inside Glenstal’s half to head towards the CBC line. The Cork side were now scrambling desperately in defence while the Glenstal pack began to edge closer to the try line.

After a concerted period of pressure,  Patrick Prendergast picked up from the base and barged his way over with Healy converting the extras to extend to lead to 18-10.

CBC’s Matthew Bowen scored a last minute try after receiving the ball out-wide and Hedderman converted, however it was to be Glenstal’s historic day when the full-time whistle blew.
