Weekend Round-Up | Limerick, Munster and Treaty win, Verstappen off the mark & More!

After a super weekend of sport we’re left to round-up all the action including Limerick’s win over Fermanagh and Munster’s victory against Benneton Treviso

After a busy weekend across the board a round up is more than necessary! In this weeks edition Gaelic, Rugby, Soccer, Basketball, Racing and hockey will be discussed.

Football

Limerick came out victorious over Fermanagh bagging them a spot in division two next season, much to the delight of the home crowd. Key performances from Hugh Bourke and Josh Ryan saw the team book a spot in next weeks Division 3 final versus Louth.

Elsewhere, in Division 1, Monaghan scraped by Dublin demoting the former giants who have looked a shell of themselves all season. Donegal and Mayo both had home victories over Armagh and Kildare respectfully, with the latter also relegated. Tyrone overturned Kerry in the kingdom. Kerry and Mayo will contest that final.

Division 2 action resumed with Clare, Cork and Derry all victors on the road in some exciting games over Down, Offaly and Meath respectfully. Roscommon had a convincing win over Galway with those sides promoted and into a final on Sunday.

Louth sealed top spot with a win over Wicklow while Longford’s win over Laois ensured their survival. Westmeath beat Antrim by four on the road to finish third in Division 3.Laois and Wicklow will be in Div 4 next spring after finishing bottom of the pile.

In Division 4 action, Sligo held their own against Leitrim winning by six. Carlow and Wexford drew level while Cavan slaughtered Waterford. Tipperary won convincingly over London to move into the League final with Cavan.


Hurling

Division 1 relegation play-off and both of the semi finals were played. Antrim beat Offaly 2-24 to 2-17 to maintain their place in the top tier. Cork saw out Kilkenny in the first semi-final and they will meet Waterford in the final after they beat Wexford 5-20 to 0-16.


Rugby

In the Ultimate Rugby Championship Munster had a really convincing win over Benneton Treviso beating them 51-22 in which Simon Zebo, Gavin Coombes and Craig Casey were among the try scorers.

Elsewhere in the URC, the Lions overcame Ospreys with ease. Leinster were able to take advantage of there extra man beating Connacht at the Sportsground. Cardiff, Bulls and Stormers all had home victories over Glasgow, Dragons and Ulster respectfully. Edinburgh and Scarlets were the only away winners over the weekend beating Sharks and Zebre respectfully.


Soccer

Treaty United bagged a crucial win at home to Waterford F.C beating them 2-1 in the Airtricity First Division. The result leaves Treaty joined fourth with Longford on seven points whilst Cork City still top the table on 16.

In the divisions other games, Cork City beat Athlone 4-1, Longford Town defeated Galway United FC while Bray Wanderers and Comb Ramblers played out a stale mate.

Ireland drew 2-2 with Belgium at the Aviva Stadium. Germany and Netherlands were both victorious beating Israel and Denmark respectfully. Albania and Switzerland both suffered at the hands of Spain and England respectfully.


Basketball

In the Eastern Conference, The Boston Celtics beat the Minnesota Timberwolves easily holding their spot at the top of their conference. The Brooklyn Nets overcame the Miami Heat leaving the Heat to be off the mark and still be in second. The Milwaukee Bucks lost also leaving them third, losing out to the Memphis Grizzlies who remain second in the Western Conference. The Phoenix Suns continue to prove their talent beating the Philadelphia 76ers. The Golden State Warriors suffered without Steph Curry losing to the Washington Wizards leaving them in third out West.


Formula One

Max Verstappen beat Charles Leclerc to pole in the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix, the second of the season.

Race One winner, Le Clerc led for the majority of the 50 laps but with three to go, last year’s champion Verstappen was able to overtake.

Leclerc’s Ferrari team-mate, Carlos Sainz placed third above Sergio Perez and both Mercedes’ cars as seven time champions Lewis Hamilton finished 10th.

Ferrari currently lead the Constructors championship by a distance with LeClerc and Sainz at one and two in the standings.
