Weekly Limerick Racing News: Plenty of success for local trainers

Limerick Racing News

Austin Leahy scored a popular success at his local track on Saturday where Drombeg Dream had an easy time of things in the 7f conditions’ race. A winner at Gowran Park last month, the three-year-old is now the winner of four races and could well step up in class for a listed race at Naas this coming Sunday. She won at odds of 8/15 favourite here in the hands of Shane Foley.

Eric McNamara was among the winners at Greenmount Park on Sunday where John Thomas McNamara was remembered as the Munster National was once again run in his name. The Rathkeale trainer won the Listed Dunraven Hotel Adare Novice Hurdle with Percy Veer, the 25/1 chance, the outsider of the six-runner field, winning by three lengths under Davy Russell. Patrickswell trainer Michael Hourigan won the David Fitzgerald Memorial Handicap Hurdle with The Gatechecker for JP McManus and Mark Walsh. The 9/2 chance just held Eric McNamara’s Offshore Oscar by a length.

Willie Mullins captured yet another high-profile race on the Flat when the Seamie Heffernan-ridden Low Sun took the Dubai £500,000 Cesarewitch Handicap at Newmarket on Saturday. The champion jumps trainer had seven runners in the race and landed a one-two with Uradel just beaten a neck into second place.

Aidan O’Brien, out of luck with US Navy Flag (9th) in The Everest at Randwick on Saturday morning, was still on the scoresheet in Australian at the weekend, where his Yucatan was a very easy winner of the Group 2 Ladbrokes Herbert Power Stakes at Caulfield under Kiwi rider James McDonald. The Curragh Group 3 International Stakes winner last July scored by an eased down length and a quarter to enhance his prospects for the upcoming Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup.
