As expected, Cork dominated possession, but in truth they failed to create much by way of a concrete threat, and required an early penalty to hit the net on Friday.
Tommy Barrett felt that his Treaty United side “had the chances to win the game” as they played out a 1-1 draw away to Cork City at Turners Cross on Friday evening.
The Shannonsiders came away from the league leaders with a point, meaning their winless run in the League of Ireland First Division extended to 14 games, and they remain eighth in the table.
Speaking after Friday’s tie, Barrett said he thought his team “defended brilliantly” and that they “probably had the better chances.”
“They had more of the football which you’d expect but I thought we defended brilliantly and I don’t think Corey had a save to make really, not a legitimate save anyway. Their keeper pulled off a few good saves from Lee, we hit the crossbar twice, we still had the chances to win the game. In terms of possession they had the ball obviously but I think we probably had the better chances.”
The Treaty boss thought that his charges put in a “very good defensive performance” on an evening where they were always going to be up against it away to the league leaders.
As expected, Cork dominated possession, but in truth they failed to create much by way of a concrete threat, and required an early penalty to hit the net on Friday.
The referee pointed to the spot after just six minutes when Thomas Considine was adjudged to have handled the ball as he attempted to clear a cross into his own box.
Barrett thought the decision was “very harsh” but “probably a penalty in this day and age.”
“A very good defensive performance, limited them to nothing, they got a penalty which is disappointing obviously. It was very close to him, it’s not a natural position he kicked it off himself, I think those penalties are very harsh. Letter of the law it’s probably a penalty in this day and age, but it’s hard to know , no one seems to know the penalty rule whether it’s accidental or not, I don’t even think the refs know half the time. We took it on the chin, we didn’t fold. The effort is always there, we’ve been very unlucky in a lot of the games.”
