Collision and breakdown Key if Munster are to prevail against Scarlets

Collision and breakdown are key if Munster are to prevail against Scarlets.

Former Munster scrum half Mike Prendergast gives his thoughts on Saturday’s Pro12 final.

It’s very much a clash of styles as Munster who are the best defence in the competition take on one of most ambitions attacking teams in the Scarlets.

With the Welsh team looking to move the ball wide and at pace, Prendergast reckons that Munster’s efforts at the breakdown will play a huge role is slowing down the pace of Scarlets attack.

“Scarlets have real purpose in what they do in their attack, they fill the field really well so they are going to stretch Munster’s defence. They are really potent out wide but the hard yards need to be made up front and I think that’s where Munster are going to try and put the squeeze on and try slow that ball down.

“Scarlets were so dangerous against Leinster with turnover ball, a lot of them down to Leinster handling errors but I don’t expect Munster to give Scarlets the same opportunities of errors.”

Despite not having the biggest pack Munster have had an incredibly reliable set piece that has served as a launchpad for a lot of attacking game. Prendergast also reckons the Rassie Erasmus and co have focused on Munster’s work in the collision and have

“Even before the breakdown is the collision, if Munster – which they have been doing against bigger sides in –  win the collision then you have decision around the breakdown with players like Peter O’Mahony and CJ Stander getting opportunities to get hands to he ball and denying Scarlets quick ball.”

It promises to the an epic encounter and one not to be missed. Let’s hope Munster can cap off what has been an emotional season with a domestic title.
