WATCH: Billy Lee optimistic ahead of Munster Football Championship

Limerick enter the 2019 Munster championship looking for a first victory since 2012 where they beat Waterford. Indeed Limerick’s last victory over a side other than Waterford came in 2009 when they defeated Clare to reach the Munster final.

The years since have been bleak for the footballers who have had to contend with the recent success of the their hurling counterparts.

Yet under Billy Lee, Limerick have made much progress and ahead of the clash with Tipperary in Thurles, with Lee in confident spirits speaking at the launch of the 2019 Munster Football and Hurling championships.

“We’re looking forward to it but it will be a challenge, needless to say. Tipperary were in Division 2 for a number of years. That’s what you want to pitch yourself against to see are we improving.”

Although his squad is relatively young, the majority have been in the set up for at least two years with leaders like Iain Corbett, Donal O’Sullivan and Seamus O’Carroll sprinkled throughout the team.

As such, Lee is hoping the squad can head to Semple Stadium with confidence and go head to head with a Tipperary side who made huge strides under Liam Kearns themselves.

“They know they’re right on the door of being very competitive. We always have to believe that we can be competitive against the Tipp’s and Clare’s of this world… Keep that in our heads and keep striving to get there.”
