This Sunday, Limerick ISKA Pro Irish Middlewight champion Jamie Morrissey will defend his title against Dublin fighter Alex Akimov at the Strand Hotel.
After winning the belt earlier this summer in Cork, this will serve as the Limerick man’s first title defense.
A week out from the fight we caught up with the EireMuaySiam ThaiBoxing man to see how preparation has gone.
“Probably training for about ten weeks. I made the mistake when I was younger of slacking off between fights but now I keep tipping. You get into intense training about eight weeks out, you don’t want to overdo it either.”
Although he acknowledges the support he has from his backroom team, Morrissey outlines how important mental preparation is to ensure he is at his best when he is alone with his opponent on fight night.
“It’s everything for me personally. About three weeks out from a fight I get into the zone. Mental preparation is as important as anything.”
Headlining such a big event hasn’t gone unnoticed by Morrissey who shared his appreciation with all those who have supported him and those who will do so this Sunday in the Strand.
“First off, thank you to anything who bought tickets and is coming to support. We love to fight but it makes it all the better when ye come and support us and what makes us feel like fighters.”
“This weekend I’m fighting for all of Limerick and all my team.”
