On This Day: Limerick lose out in league to Tipp as Na Piarsaigh fall in All-Ireland semi-final

February 8

On this day six years ago, Limerick were on the losing side against Tipperary in Division 3 of the NFL while Na Piarsaigh fell at the penultimate hurdle in the club All-Ireland championship a year previously.

2015

Limerick were comprehensively beaten 1-14 to 1-2 by Tipperary in the second round of the National Football League in Semple Stadium.

Wayward shooting was to be Limerick’s downfall as they went scoreless in the first half with seven wides as Tipperary lead 0-8 to 0-0 at the half.

Limerick wouldn’t get on the scoresheet until the 44th minute with Iain Corbett grabbing a point. Seanie Buckley’s goal shortly after brought the deficit back to five to give Limerick hope.

But any chance of a Limerick fightback was dashed when Ian Fahey netted for the Premier County to push the game beyond the Shannonsiders.

Peter Nash pointed in response but Tipp were value for a twelve point win.

2014

For the second time in three years, Na Piarsaigh would fall at the semi-final stage of the All-Ireland club hurling championship as they lost out 1-15 to 1-11 against Portumna in Semple Stadium.

Portumna’s flying start would pave the way for a four point victory with the Galway side reaching a fourth final in nine years.

The Galway champions were quickest off the board putting up 1-1 as Na Piarsaigh struggled in the difficult conditions.

However, Sean Stack’s team rallied and after 20 minutes there was just a point between the sides.

Na Piarsaigh would take the lead before Joe Canning replied with a free to leave it 0-9 to 1-6 at the half.

Portumna were a point clear after 40 minutes before five unanswered in the next ten minutes gave them a 1-14 to 0-11 lead.

Shane Dowling goaled from the penalty spot on 57 minutes to give Nap hope but Canning would have the final say in a four point win for the Galway kingpins.
