PREVIEW: Galtee Gaels meet Oola in novel Limerick SFC quarter-final

The Limerick Senior Football Championship quarter-final takes place on Saturday afternoon in Kilmallock.

Galtee Gaels and Oola meet this Saturday in a unique Limerick SFC quarter-final clash.

Galtee Gaels will be competing in the knockout stages of the Limerick SFC in just their second year in the senior ranks after they were victorious in both of their group games. After beating Drom Broadford in the 2020 relegation final, the Gaels have now won three SFC games on the bounce. In their opener this year, they beat St Kierans by a point 0-12 to 1-8 after a late fightback. They followed this up with a comprehensive 1-15 to 1-10 win over Ballysteen to top group one.

Oola fell to a heavy defeat to Adare in their first game and looked destined for the relegation play offs before a last gasp goal against Na Piarsaigh saw off the city side and secured Oola’s passage to the knockout stages for the third successive year.

This will be the second successive meeting of the sides after they were paired together in the championship last year. In Galtee’s first game back in the senior ranks in 25 years, they fell to a 1-15 to 0-11 point loss after a bright start that saw them go into an early 0-4 to 0-0 lead. Fiachra O’Grady’s goal proving crucial in Oola’s win.

Recent meetings

2020: Oola 1-15 : 0-11 Galtee Gaels

The recent history between the sides is so sparse with Galtee Gaels were plying their trade in the Junior Championship as recently as 2017. That year, they defeated Croom by thirteen points in the decider. The following year they consolidated their place at the Intermediate grade before reaching the final in their second year in the second tier. In the final there was nothing to separate themselves and Gerald Griffins, but the South outfit had two points to spare in the replay to move into the senior ranks where after a difficult maiden year, they have shown their class.

Oola are far more experienced in the top flight of Limerick football but were also relatively recent winners of the Intermediate championship, defeating Claughaun in the 2015 decider. In 2017, they reached the quarter-finals for the first time and in 2019 they made it all the way to the final for the first time in 39 years. They were beaten by six points by Newcastle West in the final.

A novel tie certainly but a huge opportunity for both.
