Watch | Limerick Hurling Star Gearoid Hegarty “couldn’t care less” about criticism following red card against Galway

Limerick star hurler Gearoid Hegarty featured on OTB AM this morning and reflected on this year National Hurling League

Limerick’s brand of hurling has been a physically dominant style over the last couple of years. This has brought them to three All-Ireland titles in four years.

John Kiely’s machine is ruthless when they’re on the pitch never settling for a soft result and making every team work twice as hard for every ball in front of them.

Hegarty who was part of the start of this Limerick’s sides dynasty has received an All-Star for the class he has shown both on and off the pitch.

Hegarty reflects on where his motivation comes from and the drive that makes him the best player he can be in the biggest games:

“My motivation comes from, it’s always been the same it’s never changed, just getting the most out of myself just trusting in myself. I always ask myself the question before championship , ‘ have I trained as hard as I can, have I prepared as best I can’ and if you can honestly tick those boxes and say yes you can well then your as best prepared as you can be.”

Reminiscing on his red card against Galway the wing forward is open on how he will prevent incidents like this again:

“It’s a moment that puts you back in your box a little bit, you know you got to learn from those moments. It’s a horrible thing to happen getting sent off, leaving your team-mates down, having to go home and look at your family, you just feel awkward. Like any other mistake in your life you have to learn from it and make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

Limerick’s hurling structure is the best in the country at the moment especially to accommodate this band of players who’s skill level as a unit is rarely seen:

“We’re a group of players who strive to be the best we can be and obviously we have a lot of talent but also we are extremely lucky to have the guys over us that are over us.”
