After just missing out on the title to Pembroke Wanderers, the Limerick side were able to get the upper hand in the cup final!
Catholic Institute are Irish Senior Cup champions for the first time ever after they defeated League champions Pembroke Wanderers 1-0 in Belfield.
Aoife Hickey was the hero of the day as her 16th minute goal secured the title for the Limerick side.
Insta had been beaten out to a maiden League title Pembroke last month but prevented the Dublin outfit from a treble on Saturday.
Only a week previously, Pembroke were comprehensive 4-1 winners over Insta in the Champions Trophy as they added to the EY Hockey League triumph from April.
But after the heavy defeat last week, Insta were far more solid as they kept their opponents at bay.
The break through came just after the quarter hour mark as Hickey finished expertly after finishing from Naomi Carroll’s knee high cross.
Pembroke pushed for the equalizer in the second half and had five penalty corners but could find no response to the determined Insta rearguard.
And the Limerick side held out for a historic win to complete a dream season as they firmly established themselves as one of Ireland’s premier teams, picking up a maiden Senior Cup title, finishing second in the league and as runners up in the Champions Trophy.
