Last year was the first Limerick SHC final not to feature Na Piarsaigh since 2016.

As the throw-in approaches for the 2022 Bon Secours Senior Hurling Championship, Na Piarsaigh look to get back to winning ways as they face Doon in their first group game.

It’s hard to argue that Kieran Bermingham’s side, who won the Limerick hurling league this year, haven’t been the best side in the county over the last decade. The Caherdavin side have only missed out on four Limerick SHC’s finals since 2009, winning six since their first in 2011.

A semi-final defeat to Patrickswell in the 2021 championship was a bump in the road for Na Piarsaigh but Adrian Breen believes any of the top sides will feel have the ability to beat the other this year.

“Any one of those perceived top teams are going to be a massive threat. I think on any given day, each of them would fancy beating the other one.”

“If we can keep our panel healthy from 1-36, that gives us the opportunity to produce a higher standard of training and ultimately, a higher standard of results.”

Touching on the side’s recent success, Breen believes that they’ve built a tradition over the last decade or so and feels it’s important for the players to keep it on if they’re to continue winning.

“I think since 2011 we’ve built a bit of a tradition, it’s still a very new tradition, so it’s up to this group of players to continue to drive that on. But it is a fresh new team, a lot of new panelists, so it’s up to them to put their hands up for the jersey, build that competition in-house and hopefully put together a good championship run.”

“It took a lot of years to build a winning culture and to get a strong collection of adult players together. We were staving off relegation for a long time and you manage to build an underage system that produce winners.”
