Strong second half helps Colaiste Na Trocaire to All-Ireland Hurling title

It completes the perfect year for Colaiste Na Trocaire who have won each of their six contests in annexing Munster and All-Ireland honours.

Colaiste Na Trocaire Rathkeale have been crowned Masita All-Ireland PPS D Hurling Champions after they beat Lucan CBS in this afternoon’s decider in the LOETB Centre of Excellence.

The Rathkeale school overturned a half-time deficit to claim the national title with a 2-21 to 1-16 victory.

It completes the perfect year for Colaiste Na Trocaire who have won each of their six contests in annexing Munster and All-Ireland honours. They are also the first recipients of the trophy in the maiden year of a D All-Ireland series.

With the aid of a breeze in the first half, Lucan CBS opened up a five-point, 1-11 to 0-9 lead at the interval.

But five minutes into the second and Rathkeale had levelled proceedings, clipping over 1-2 without reply. They built on this lead to move three clear with their second goal with a quarter of an hour to play leaving them 2-15 to 1-14 in front.

The Dublin school reduced the margin to a goal but they wouldn’t score again with Rathkeale finding the final five points to seal the title.

Cian O’Carroll, who was named on the Limerick U20s hurling squad during the week, accepted the trophy as he praised the honesty of effort from his teammates.

“Finally to the team. Boys, it’s been a pleasure to play with ye. I have never worked with such an honest and hard-working team in all my life, I love every one of ye to bits and it’s a pleasure to bring this cup back to Rathkeale.”
