HIGHLIGHTS | Tipperary inflict Phase One defeat on Limerick in Munster Minor Championship

Limerick will need to regroup next Thursday when they travel to Miltown Malbay to take on Clare, who beat Waterford.

The Limerick Minor Footballers were defeated by Tipperary in their Munster Phase 1 Football Championship opener on Thursday evening in Mick Neville Park.

It finished 0-7 to 1-11 in favor of the Premier men who exploded out of the blocks and never looked back. Limerick will need to regroup next Thursday when they travel to Miltown Malbay to take on Clare, who beat Waterford. If Tipperary overcome Waterford and Clare beat Limerick, then the final-round games will act as dead rubbers with the top two already confirmed.

The impressive Ronan O’Brien put the Thursday contest to bed in the 48th minute as Tipperary capitalised on a Limerick error in defence for the games only goal.

That made it 1-10 to 0-5 after Limerick had launched a comeback of sorts following Tipperary’s early blitz. The first six scores of the evening came from the visitors before Tommy Glynn got Limerick off the mark in the 19th minute.

Evan Curry then added to Limerick’s tally, the Athea man impressing as team’s captain with his midfield partner and captain Aidan O’Shea missing out through injury. Darragh Hogan made it three-on-the-trot for the hosts with Tipp rounding out the scoring for a 0-3 to 0-8 half time lead.

Curry reduced the gap to four points 25 seconds after the resumption. The sides exchanged scores before O’Brien’s timely green flag took the wind out of Limerick’s sails with the Premier taking a deserved victory.
