The draw for the second round of the FAI Junior Cup has been completed at Abbotstown. All Limerick clubs will be facing each other in a couple of preliminary rounds before the open draw occurs.
Last season’s semi-finalists Aisling Annacotty face fellow Premier Division side Kilmallock in Annacotty. Mike Aherne’s side were beaten 1-0 by beaten finalist Sheriff in Dublin. The Limerick club subsequently had an objection thrown out by the FAI Junior Council following the game.
Annacotty had a turbulent tournament after beating Westport in the quarter-final as the Mayo outfit objected against the eligibility of Aaron Murphy. However, the Limerick club were exonerated as it was proven quickly that Murphy had previously served his suspension and correct procedures were followed.
Last season’s quarter finalists Regional United will travel to face Division 1A side Shelbourne FC. Regional have began brightly in the league this season and currently sit third in the division despite the loss of a raft of players including Pat McDonagh and the two Cusack brothers to Janesboro.
Regional were eliminated from the competition in 2018/2019 for fielding Sosuke Kimura who turned out to be ineligible due to a lack of international clearance. Kimura had been playing in Limerick for three seasons and nobody was aware of the issue until Sheriff won the objection. Despite several appeals, Regional were disqualified.
Pike Rovers take on Pallas United at Crosagalla. The club reached the final of the competition in 2016 and 2018 but lost by the narrowest of margins to Sheriff (2016) and were defeated on penalties against North End (2018).
The ties are due to be played on the weekend ending September 29th.
