Former Ireland Assistant Maurice Setters Passes Away

Former Ireland assistant manager Maurice Setters has sadly passed away at the age of 83, the FAI has announced today. Setters was Jack Charlton’s right hand man during a successful period for Irish soccer during the 1980’s and 1990’s.

Setters was assistant coach for Euro 88, Italia 90 and USA 94. During all three tournaments Ireland exceeded expectations, particularly in 1990 when they reached the last eight of the World Cup.

An official statement of the FAI website read;

FAI President Gerry McAnaney paid tribute to Setters this evening. He stated:

“It is with a heavy heart that we learned today of Maurice’s death, another man so integral to the glory days of Irish football. Maurice was with Jack Charlton every inch of the way as they led Ireland to the 1988 European Championships and the World Cups in Italy in 1990 and the USA four years later.”

McAnaney continued by saying it has been a tough year for Irish football as we also lost Jack Charlton in recent months following a battle with dementia.

 “This has been a tough year for Irish football. We saw how the nation mourned Jack Charlton earlier this year and I know I speak on behalf of everyone involved with the Irish football community when I pass on our deepest sympathies to Maurice’s family. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.”
