Former Limerick and Patrickswell hurler Leonard Enright has passed away aged 65. The three time All-Star (1980, ’81 and ’83) was inducted into the GAA Hall of Fame at the All-Stars awards on Friday evening.
Enright was one of the finest defenders ever to grace the inter-county stage and was a stalwart of the Limerick side through the 70s and 80s.
Friday’s All Stars saw three Patrickswell players nominated (Aaron Gillane, Cian Lynch and Diarmaid Byrnes) from Limerick’s 2018 All Ireland winning side with Lynch picking up an All Star and the Hurler of the Year award.
An emotional Cian Lynch spoke of Leonard Enright during his acceptance speech.
“For me to have the opportunity to stand up here, it goes back to the small things, back to the family,” he said afterwards.
“Leonard Enright went in the Hall of Fame [tonight]. Heroes like him, legends like him, it’s what makes it extra special.
“There’s three of us here: myself, Aaron and Diarmuid. We grew up together. Patrickswell is a small little village and family means everything.
“After county hurling you always go back to your club, to your local people. And it’s an absolute honour.”
