Munster overcame a slow start in Thomond Park last Saturday when they defeated South African rivals the DHL Stormers 34 – 18 in the second round of the United Rugby Championship.
Munster conceded two tries in the opening 20 minutes of their URC clash with the Stormers on Saturday. Yet despite the fast pace displayed by the opposition, Munster regathered control before the end of the first half with a try from Jack O’Donoghue.
The Stormers suffered the loss of their captain in the second half when, second-row Salmaan Moerat was sent to the sin bin for colliding with Munster’s Peter O’Mahony while in the air at the line out. This created space for Munster’s attack as Jean Klein exploited the Stormers defence for the home side’s second try.
The grit of Munster’s maul was relied on once again as the home side hunted the lead. Nail Scannell was at the end of a powerful Munster rolling maul with saw them gain the lead for the first time throughout the game. Munster crossed the Stormers line just minutes later in the form of Jack O’Donoghue, scoring his second try of the evening.
RG Snyman was giving the chance to stretch his legs when he crashed over for Munster’s fourth and bonus point try. After a failed maul attempt, Snyman broke free using his size and strength to earn his first try for Munster.
Ben Healy concluded the miraculous Munster comeback with a lengthy penalty kick from just inside the Stormers half, thus finalising the 34 – 18 scoreline.
Munster travel to Llanelli to face 2017’s Pro14 winners Scarlets, on Sunday October 10th in the third round of the URC.
