Mungret St Pauls play their first senior championship game this century on Friday.
After years of nearly misses, Mungret St Pauls eventually got over the line last October as they claimed the Limerick Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship.
Defeating Cappamore comprehensively in the final was enough to secure promotion as their lengthy wait for senior hurling ends this Friday as they take on Kildimo Pallaskenry.
And Niall Mulcahy is hoping to make up for lost time as they return to the top tier.
“It’s been a lot of years coming, we’ve been knocking at the door for a long time and we always felt eventually we would get over the line and it’s brilliant now that we have got there and we just want to give a good account of ourselves now that we’re there and show that we can compete at this level.”
“Preparations are going really well, we’ve obviously a lot of work to do over the next few weeks. It’s been difficult at times with players going away travelling and we’ve a lot of dual players as well but thing are definitely coming together and we’re really looking forward to getting out there in the championship now.”
For Mulcahy, he will enter the championship after almost sealing All-Ireland honours, falling just short in the Joe McDonagh Cup final with Kerry.
In his maiden year with the county, Mulcahy was a regular for the Kingdom and is looking to carry that intercounty experience into the Limerick championship.
“It was a bit of a bolt from the blue, but when you get those opportunities you have to have a go and see where it leads you. I had a really enjoyable time down there, it’s a massive honour for me and my family and the group of lads I couldn’t say enough about them.”
“The level of training, it is a step up and fitness and everything improves so it’s been brilliant and hopefully now I can carry that into the championship.”
Mungret St Pauls take on Kildimo Pallaskenry this Friday in Clarina at 7pm in the first round of the Limerick Senior Hurling Championship.
